The brain drain in Africa has been a concern for everyone involved in African growth and development. This exodus of intellectual capital from Africa has caused major gaps in human resources to support higher education, health services, technology, and other sectors.

Statistics on the brain drain from Africa are scarce but troubling according to facts and figures released in the stakeholder roundtable (November 2004) sponsored by IDRC’s Canadian partnership program. International Organization for Migration (IOM) and United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) estimate that 20,000 African professionals (doctors, university lecturers, engineers, etc.) leave the continent of Africa every year. In 2018, the African Union estimates that 70,000 skilled professionals leave the continent every year. This 250 percent increase indicates that the brain drain is not slowing down. In 2013, the World Bank estimated that over 44 million African Diaspora live in Europe and North America.

Here and Home, Inc. is joining other organizations involved in connecting Africans in the Diaspora to their homeland to make a contribution in solving problems on the continent.
